June 1st, 2016
Judith Heumann, Special Advisor for International Disability Rights, met with Doudly Elius, founder of Empower Haitian Women, during Doudly’s trip to Washington to represent his work during the Spring Professional Fellows Congress.

During the meeting, Judith shared opportunities with Doudly around how USAID may provide technical guidance or training on grant management. Empower Haitian Women aims to position itself as a viable partner for such institutions. Acknowledging that founding a non-profit is a learning process, Doudly connect with Judith around plans to pursue continued training in monitoring and evaluation.

As a result of the meeting, Doudly was also connected to 24-year-old American University student Diego Mariscal. Diego is the CEO and Chief of 2-Gether International. Utilizing communication technology and the power of young people worldwide, he raises awareness and educates the public about disability. Diego has collaborated with the US Department of State, the Inter-American Development Bank, the United Nations and leading technology companies like Blackboard, to engage youth on disability. Diego has been internationally recognized for his work. In 2014, he was a Youth in International Development and Affairs Fellow for the US International Council on Disabilities. Born with cerebral palsy in New Orleans but raised in Monterrey, Mexico Diego also represented Nuevo Leon in the Mexican National Paralympics from 2004 - 2009.

Empower Haitian Women thanks Judith Heumann for her time and generosity. The connections and suggestions made will undoubtedly help advance the work Empower Haitian Women is doing to improve equity, accessibility, and independence for women and girls living with disabilities in Haiti.
